In postwar America, Lester Richards, a detective from the city of Lexington, is invited to spend an evening in the country at the home of his friend Gerald Forrest, a professor and internationally renowned biologist nearing retirement.Tensions surface among the guests almost at once, and a sudden storm forces everyone to stay the night. It is the perfect opportunity for a killer. The next morning, the body of Reginald Smith, a tormented man and a scientist whose ideas were questionable, to say the least, is found in the pool.Joining the local police in the hunt for the culprit, Detective Richards digs into the lives of everyone present and bears witness to the shadows that hang over not only the Forrest family but also the colorful society around them.
