Lester Richards is invited to spend a few days of pure relaxation in Tayport, Scotland, by his friend and county judge, Andrew Scott. What was meant to be nothing more than a peaceful holiday soon becomes a test of Richards's professional acumen. A jockey, Kirby Logan, is discovered dead at the estate of one of the region's most formidable men: Colonel Russell, a former fighter pilot. Logan's death marks the beginning of an arduous, protracted pursuit of the killer, drawing our detective into an investigation alongside the local police chief and Judge Scott.
